Cleveland Browns Schedule Observations
Week One – at Carolina: The Browns’ season opener is on the road. The NFL is surely putting itself in a position where the favorite landing spot for Baker Mayfield is a potential rating monster for week one. If Baker Mayfield ends up on the Panthers’ roster, it will surely add excitement and storylines leading up to week one.
Favorable strength of schedule weeks 1-4: The Cleveland Browns schedule is extremely forgiving in weeks 1-4. These opponents have a combined record of 25-42-1 in 2021. Only the Jets appear to have made significant strides in terms of improvements thus far.
Primetime Games:
Week 3: The Browns get a home Thursday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.Week 8: The Browns get a home Monday Night Football Game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Saturday Games:
Week 15: The Browns will potentially play on Saturday at home vs. the Baltimore Ravens.Week 16: The Browns play on Christmas Eve at home vs the New Orleans Saints.Week 18: The Browns will potentially play on Saturday in Pittsburgh to close out the season.
Bye Week: The bye week comes at the perfect time. Right in the middle of the season. The Browns however come out of their bye week with two road games.
2022 Cleveland Browns Opponent Analysis
Atlanta Falcons
Strength of Schedule: .524 (9th) 2021 Record: 7-10
Key Additions: QB Marcus Mariota, QB Desmond Ridder, WR, Drake London
Key Departures: QB Matt Ryan, WR Russell Gage, LB Foyesade Oluokun
Opponent Notes: The Atlanta Falcons shipped Matt Ryan to the Colts after pursuing Texans (now Browns) QB Deshaun Watson. Marcus Mariota and rookie Desmond Ridder will battle for the chance to toss passes to first-round wide receiver Drake London and last year’s first-rounder tight end Kyle Pitts.
Baltimore Ravens
Strength of Schedule: .474 (23rd) 2021 Record: 8-9
Key Additions: S Marcus Williams, S Kyle Hamilton, C Tyler Linderbaum, LB David Ojabo, DT Travis Jones
Key Departures: WR Marquise Brown, WR Sammy Watkins, OT Alejandro Villanueva, CB Tavon Young
Opponent Notes: The Baltimore Ravens had a stellar draft. They added key defensive pieces with high ceilings as well as C Tyler Linderbaum who will likely be a staple of their offensive line for years to come. 2021 was a terrible year for injuries in Baltimore. Look for the Ravens to be far more competitive if their DB, OL, and RB room can stay healthier this year.
Buffalo Bills
Strength of Schedule: .512 (T12th) 2021 Record: 11-6
Key Additions: RB James Cook, LB Von Miller
Key Departures: DE Jerry Hughes, DT Harrison Phillips, WR Cole Beasley*
Opponent Notes: The Buffalo Bills may finally have the answer to their horrendous rushing attack in James Cook. Look for an improved run game to help Josh Allen take the Bills to the next level. Add Von Miller into the mix on defense and things are getting interesting for one of the best teams in the AFC.
Carolina Panthers
Strength of Schedule: .512 (T12th) 2021 Record: 5-12
Key Additions: OL Ikem Ekwonu, G Austin Corbett, S Xavier Woods, QB Matt Corral
Key Departures: CB Stephon Gilmore, LB Haasan Reddick, CB AJ Bouye*
Opponent Notes: The Carolina Panthers have major questions at quarterback. Sam Darnold presumably leads the way but the Panthers invested a third-round pick in quarterback Matt Corral. The largest contributing factor to the Panthers’ success this year will be the status of Christian McCaffrey. With a mostly new and improved offensive line, he could return to his elite form if he can stay on the field.
Cincinnati Bengals
Strength of Schedule: .536 (3rd) 2021 Record: 10-7
Key Additions: G Alex Cappa, G Ted Karras, OT La’el Collins, TE Hayden Hurst
Key Departures: TE C.J. Uzomah, DT Larry Ogunjobi*
Opponent Notes: The Cincinnati Bengals prioritized improving their offensive line to better protect quarterback Joe Burrow. While they made the Super Bowl last year, they face a much tougher path to the playoffs this year with the 3rd toughest schedule in the NFL.
Houston Texans
Strength of Schedule: .488 (19th) 2021 Record: 4-13
Key Additions: CB Derek Stingley Jr., G Kenyon Green
Key Departures: QB Deshaun Watson, QB Tyrod Tayler, S Justin Reid
Opponent Notes: The Houston Texans haven’t done much to improve an already dismal roster. What should be a “layup” for opponents on their schedule could end up being a trap game that could threaten playoff chances for teams in a historically stacked AFC conference.
Los Angeles Chargers
Strength of Schedule: .519 (10th) 2021 Record: 9-8
Key Additions: EDGE Khalil Mack, CB J.C Jackson, TE Gerald Everett
Key Departures: DT Linval Joseph*, LB Kyzir White, LB Uchenna Nwosu
Opponent Notes: The AFC West division is going to be brutal for defenses and the Chargers put their best foot forward by acquiring premier players in Khalil Mack and J.C Jackson. The Chargers have a high octane offense led by Justin Herbert, Keenan Allen, and Mike Williams. This will be one of the tougher tests for a tough Browns secondary this year.
Miami Dolphins
Strength of Schedule: .481 (21st) 2021 Record: 9-8
Key Additions: WR Tyreek Hill, WR Cedrick Wilson, OT Terron Armstead, RB Chase Edmonds
Key Departures: WR Will Fuller*
Opponent Notes: The Miami Dolphins have one of the best wide receiver rooms in the NFL with their splash addition of Tyreek Hill. The big question will be whether or not quarterback Tua Tagovailova will be able to feed the ball to Hill and Jaylen Waddle well enough.
New England Patriots
Strength of Schedule: .498 (16th) 2021 Record: 10-7
Key Additions: WR DeVante Parker, OT Trent Brown, S Jabrill Peppers, LB Mack Wilson
Key Departures: CB J.C. Jackson, DE Chase Winovich, LB Kyle Van Noy, G Ted Karras
Opponent Notes: The New England Patriots added another weapon for quarterback Mac Jones in wide receiver DeVante Parker. Jones looks to improve in his sophomore campaign. The AFC is likely too tough for real success this year in New England but they won’t be an easy opponent. This matchup will feature Mack Wilson and Chase Winovich who were traded for each other.
New Orleans Saints
Strength of Schedule: .528 (T7th) 2021 Record: 9-8
Key Additions: WR Chris Olave, S Marcus Maye, S Tyrann Mathieu, S Daniel Sorenson
Key Departures: LT Terron Armstead
Opponent Notes: The New Orleans Saints don’t know if they have their franchise quarterback in Jameis Winston. He’s likely a bridge QB for them, however, he can really give defenses a hard time. He’ll have Chris Olave and Michael Thomas through the air and could create big problems for defenses.
New York Jets
Strength of Schedule: .495 (T17th) 2021 Record: 4-13
Key Additions: CB Ahmad Gardner, WR Garrett Wilson, RB Breece Hall, G Laken Tomlinson, S DJ Reed, S Jordan Whitehead, TE C.J. Uzomah
Key Departures: S Marcus Maye, DT Foley Fatukasi
Opponent Notes: The New York Jets had one of the best drafts of any team in 2022. They added difference makers on both offense and defense. QB Zach Wilson flashed in his rookie year but ultimately had an extremely rocky start to his career. Will Wilson and Hall help take his game to the next level?
Pittsburgh Steelers
Strength of Schedule: .512 (T12) 2021 Record: 9-7-1
Key Additions: QB Mitch Trubisky, QB Kenny Pickett
Key Departures: QB Ben Roethlisberger, WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, S Terell Edmunds*, CB Joe Haden*
Opponent Notes: A new era begins at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Will the Cleveland Browns face Kenny Pickett or Mitch Trubisky? They could end up facing both. This is likely to be one of the toughest seasons for the Steelers in recent memory. It’s never easy transitioning from your franchise quarterback. Can Tomlin find a way to stay competitive?
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Strength of Schedule: .535 (4th) 2021 Record: 13-4
Key Additions: WR Russell Gage
Key Departures: TE Rob Gronkowski*, DE Jason Pierre-Paul*, DT Ndamukong Suh*, G Alex Kappa, S Jordan Whitehead, RB Ronald Jones II
Opponent Notes: Last year the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ran it back with all 22 of their starters. That certainly doesn’t appear to be the case this year. Fortunately for the Bucs, Tom Brady’s retirement didn’t last long. With Bruce Arians retiring from coaching, it remains to be seen how the Bucs will look this year. One thing is for certain though, you can’t ever count out Tom Brady.
Washington Commanders
Strength of Schedule: .462 (T31st) 2021 Record: 7-10
Key Additions: QB Carson Wentz, WR Jahan Dotson
Key Departures: G Brandon Scherff
Opponent Notes: The Washington Commanders certainly couldn’t successfully orchestrate and acquisition of a bona fide franchise quarterback this year. They did however decide to take a chance on former Colts and Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. While Wentz is likely an improvement for the Commanders over their 2021 QB room, nothing is certain.
